Chesley Ontario

Chesley, Ontario is a small community in the municipality of Arran-Elderslie, located north of Walkerton on Bruce Road 19 and north of Hanover on County Road 10. Founded in 1858 on the shores of the Saugeen River, Chesley has never grown beyond 2,000 people, yet it boasts an active hospital, new medical clinic, busy community center and newly amalgamated junior kindergarten to Grade 12 school.

Chesley’s slogan is “The Nicest Town Around”, and its residents strive to live up to that sentiment. Visitors entering from the north end of town will be greeted by the statue of a giant bull known affectionately as Big Bruce; he’s always decked out for major holidays and is a source of pride among those who live in the community.

Lifestyle in Chesley

The town has recently been working to establish a network of trails. By linking many of its existing walking paths, Chesley has created the Heritage Trail, which can be enjoyed year round by walkers, hikers, bicyclists and cross-country skiers. Surrounded by beautiful scenery including several waterside parks, the trail also offers glimpses of the wildlife found in and around Chesley.

Chesley’s community park, located just behind the community center, offers outdoor swimming and splash pools in the summer, a three-season skateboard park, boat launch and picnic shelter. A paved boardwalk along the river beckons outdoor enthusiasts, and those interested in fishing will find ample opportunities here.

On the cultural front, the Chesley Community Players are dedicated to promoting amateur talent in the area. They are currently restoring the Bijou Theatre building on Chesley’s main street, and provide an opportunity for local youth and adults to participate in live theatrical and musical performances.

Whether you want to join the horticultural society, get involved with school activities or offer your services as a volunteer firefighter, the community of Chesley is saving a place for you.
